Dental veneers are so thin that they can be bonded to your teeth on their front portion, and thus do not take away from the appearance or alignment of your smile. They are quite different from dental crowns, which actually cover the tooth in its entirety and thus entirely hide the appearance of your teeth.
Porcelain Shells
The dental veneer process uses porcelain shells, a material which is very brittle and delicate. Through a special bonding process the veneers and teeth strengthen each other and the end result is that the teeth look beautiful and are also natural in their appearance, and are very durable as well. Dental veneers mimic the appearance of enamel and thus create a very cosmetically appealing while restoring your teeth to a pristine condition.
Although dental veneers are very strong, remember that they are made from porcelain and are not well suited to certain things such as twisting or grinding. You must take care of your dental veneers; do not eat foods on which you have to gnaw or where any kind of twisting takes place.
There are also a number of other uses for dental veneers, which include their being a substitute for tooth whitening. Dental veneers can also be used as alternatives to crowns, braces and other techniques used in cosmetic dentistry. Veneers made from porcelain can help camouflage your chipped and even discolored teeth, straighten your teeth and also reshape and even realign your smile.
Not Always Covered
The main aim of using dental veneers is to get a cosmetic change made to your teeth, and because this is considered aesthetic improvement, the costs are usually not covered by dental insurance plans (though a discount here or there can possibly be had).
Typical costs of getting dental veneers can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. If cost is an issue, look for cosmetic dentists who will allow a payment plan, and shop around for the best value. Also explore the option of getting composite veneers instead, which are a cheaper choice and will normally cost far less. You will find them of lesser quality and durability, but they may be just the trick. Good luck!
